The Show Must Go On

“John Kilmer? Now where have I heard that name before?” Dexter teased from behind the safety of her screen. I had a bowl of paper clips and some elastic bands on my desk and was not afraid to use them.

“Dexy, don’t joke. It’s not funny. Really not funny.” Sharon rose and paced around the room. “It’s the opposite of funny. It’s… there could be two John Kilmers, right?”

Pussy stood up to comfort her new best friend. “I’m sorry, Honey. I don’t understand. You know Mr Kilmer?”

Sharon couldn’t find the words to answer her, so I stepped in. “I put Mr Kilmer away fifteen years ago for a series of heinous crimes. He isn’t sipping sangria in Benidorm. He’s serving two life sentences in Belmarsh.”

“Then Sharon is right. There must be two John Kilmers. The man I know couldn’t be a violent criminal. He’s a dote.” It was Pussy’s turn to pace the office. Both women crossed each other as they walked from one desk to the other, getting more hysterical with each pass.

“You said yourself you hardly knew him.” Sharon tutted as she pinged between desks, wringing her hands. “He must have known you were on his tail, Mikey, and Pussy here was the perfect patsy.”

“Patsy? For what? I didn’t do anything wrong. I know nothing about a gun, or a secret stash, or any of his other crimes. If it’s the same man. Which it can’t be. Fifteen years!” Pussy stopped pacing and fell back into her chair. “What’s in my flat? What did he do? I haven’t been sleeping with a dead body, have I? Someone hidden behind a wall?”

Sharon paused. Her eyes racked with fear. Her lower lip trembled. “Oh, Mikey, you don’t think that’s it, do you?”

It was possible. I arrested John Kilmer for two murders only because we never found the other bodies. “I’m sorry, but it might be. My question is why now? Why draw attention to this now and in such an overly dramatic way?”

“To get your attention, obviously.” Dexter left her fortress and perched herself on the edge of her desk. “Whilst you were all having a meltdown, I googled Mr Kilmer. There are no other John Kilmers that I can find. But I had a quick read of the press coverage. There were multiple victims. This guy is a psychopath. Like a true Hannibal Lector. A Dahmer, or a Nilsen.”

Pussy’s hand rose to catch the shock from her mouth. It caught the first wave of last night’s pizza instead. The rest dripped over onto the toes of her stilettos and the threadbare rug beneath. “I’m sorry. I just can’t…”

“Here, I’ll get you some kitchen roll.” Sharon sprung into full nurse mode. “And don’t worry about the floor. We’ve been meaning to upgrade, anyway. Haven’t we, Mikey?”

“I’ll take care of them. Don’t worry. Dexter, I need you to get me the names and addresses of every visitor John Kilmer has had over the last fifteen years. Everyone he shared a cell with and the prison officers who worked his wing.
